On Thursday, media reports surfaced about outdoor retailer Bass Pro Shops potentially preparing a bid to purchase its primary competitor Cabela’s, Inc. If the speculation is true, it would mark another major addition to the Bass Pro empire and give the Springfield, Mo.-based company a massive share of the outdoor retail market.
According to a Reuters report, Bass Pro is working with an investment bank on a potential offer and according to unidentified sources cited by Reuters, "Cabela's has recently begun to explore its options and has also reached out to private equity firms to solicit interest.”
Today, the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald has a story that touches on the potential impact a Cabela’s sale would have on the town of Sidney, Neb., where Cabela’s is headquartered. Oscar Glover, a longtime Sidney entrepreneur and developer, told the paper, “everybody is on pins and needles.” The company employs about 2,000 people in the city of 6,800, according to the World-Herald report.
