U.S. drops to 4th at World Championship

Team USA fell one position from third place to fourth Friday on Day 2 of the World Bass Championship at Lake Bolsena in Italy.

The Americans, who've won three consecutive titles in the event, have 77 "penalties" (the combined placements in the standings of a country's three duos, with a lower total being better). The host Italians lead with 57, followed by Australia with 59 and Spain with 62.

Jacob Wheeler and Nicholas Morril remain the only U.S. tandem in the Top 10 of the duos standings. Like the team, they also fell one place on Day 2 (eighth to ninth). They've weighed just over 36 pounds in two days.

Morril is a fill-in for U.S. captain Scott Martin, who flew home before the event began to attend to a family matter. Morril went to Italy to serve as a camera operator for Wheeler.

Competition concludes with the final round on Saturday.
