RE: Palaniuk's young assistant – Mr. Palaniuk, thank you for taking the time to help our young anglers with your generosity. You represent the sport of bass fishing over and above.

Back in the '70s when Dee Thomas got his first Ranger boat, me and a friend talked him out of his aluminum bass boat for a day of fishing. He schooled us at his house in Fremont, Calif. on what to do and how to do it. We caught a boat load of bass that day. That I have never for gotten and it started a fire for flipping and pitching. I'm 70 years old now. Flipping is has helped me make a couple of state B.A.S.S. Nation teams. It was the technique that landed me a 7.1-pound largemouth bass from shore after work one evening here in Oklahoma. where I live now. Dee Thomas was truly a good teacher and a character!

Dee Thomas was my dad. Thanks for this wonderful article, and yes, he is already sorely missed but is the younger version of himself, healthy and kicking ass on the water in heaven.

  • Gary Klein of Mingus, TX writes:

Thank you for your article about Dee Thomas! Dee was a friend to so many!

  • Sean Smith of Branson West, MO writes:

RIP Dee Thomas. I remember my buddy Danny coming and saying "Hey, have you seen this new thing called flipping?" and we stood on the back deck of our house for hours working on the technique. Never met you, but we lost an icon of the sport. Prayers to those who knew and loved you.

  • Ray Shelton of Kernersville, NC writes:

I pray you people will do what is right – the lakes in Florida are being destroyed by spraying. The contractors spray everything in sight. They do not target invasives, they just kill everything they can. Control, not destroy!

RE: Elite qualification route – B.A.S.S. just pulled the biggest bonehead move I have ever seen. Now, to qualify for the Elites, you have to be rich. I guess "Elite" means elitely wealthy, to fish all nine opens to qualify. Shame on you, Chase Anderson.

  • Jason Meninger of Fernandina Beach, FL writes:

RE: Balog on female anglers – Great read, my friend. Like everything in life, our mindset affects the outcomes of our pursuits. It’s very complicated as we each have many important things and feelings to focus on in our individual lives. It’s extremely hard to balance all of them and achieve happiness or success in everything we do all the time. The more we take on, the harder it becomes. Learning how to balance it all is and always will be our biggest challenge.

  • Jon Deer of Deerfield, OH writes:

RE: Balog on female anglers – Women have had their own tours for over 35 years. You are banking your entire writeup on one female angler with the last name Martin. It's easy to see her stealing the lion's share of the female market after her high school days.

  • David Harrison of Huntsville, AL writes:

RE: Balog on female anglers – I think the reason we don't have any women at the "elite" level currently is that they have to fish with men to get to that level, and the bathroom issue comes into play. I fish with my daughter regularly. She is every bit as good as my son was. Heck, she usually catches the biggest fish of the day, for the unexplained reasons you discuss. But she would not feel comfortable in a boat with a man she never met if nature calls. On the kayak trail you're alone and can launch anywhere. Much more freedom.

I fished as a co-angler for years. There were strict rules against getting out of site of your partner or leaving the boat. Just my thoughts from fishing with my daughter for over 20 years. I agree that it is only a matter of time until a lady makes the Elites. There is no doubt many have the skill and talent to compete.

RE: Balog on Wheeler – Great article on a great fisherman, really enjoyed it.
