Going into the Guntersville BASSMASTER, Ohio's Frank Scalish had a 122-point lead over Texas' Yusuke Miyazaki and seemed a shoe-in to in the sport's first Rookie of the Year title.
But at that tournament -- in which rookies didn't do well overall -- Scalish had his worst finish of the season (115th) while Miyazaki and fellow rookie Roger Boler tied for 60th, the highest any rookies finished at Guntersville.
The result is that Scalish remains in 1st in the BassFan.com Rookie of the Year race, but by only 67 points over Miyazaki. Third in the Rookie points race is Warren Wyman of California, but he is 141 points behind Scalish.
So barring a no-show by Scalish at the Eufaula BASSMASTER (May 8-11), and Wyman winning the tournament, the race on the B.A.S.S. side will be between Scalish and Miyazaki. Who will win? BassFans will have to wait until May to find out.
Another question is whether any of the FLW rookies can catch the B.A.S.S. guys. The answer? Absolutely.
With three FLW tournaments to go, Harmon Davis, Adam Wright, Jimmi Leuthner or one of the other FLW rookies could catch or pass the B.A.S.S. guys and become the sport's first Rookie of the Year.
