Jay Yelas – Practice
Wednesday, July 8, 2009

I said coming in that I wasn't going to go down to Ticonderoga. I don't want to do anything silly and risk not getting back. But the fishing's so good here, you still have to get quality fish because everybody catches limits. That's why I'm pleasantly surprised with my practice. I've been catching quite a few good largemouths without running down there, so I've gone from playing it conservative to thinking I have a shot at doing real well. There's good largemouths in the north end too. It can be won there with largemouths.

Tuesday was the best practice day I had. I caught nice, big green ones. But on Monday I caught a good bag of smallmouths – maybe 16 pounds or so. There's really a lot of different things going on. It's a fun place to fish and you can catch them just about any way you want to.

I'm mostly flipping around grass, docks or whatever with a jig. There are some good smallmouths ripping a spinnerbait too. I thought it'd be too early, but they're on it.

I'm going to fish for green ones first thing – I have two schools. After that I'll go try to pick a big one off here or there. I feel my best chance to win is with largemouths. I feel like I can catch them without much trouble. It's just matter of getting the big ones.
