Ethanol, the country's primary fuel additive, is a disaster for small engines (such as the ones that power recreational fishing boats) due to the sludgy compound it creates through a process called "phase separation." In terms of fossil-fuel consumption, ethanol's benefits are almost completely offset by its cost to produce. Nonetheless, the amount of ethanol in the U.S. fuel supply is slated to increase in 2018.
