New York angler catches 8.58-pound smallmouth

The New York state smallmouth bass record was potentially broken on Wednesday in a one-day tournament at Cayuga Lake. Thomas Russell used a dropshot rig to entice an 8.58-pound specimen that topped a 30-pound-plus winning bag for he and partner Eric Sullivan.

The catch is awaiting certification by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. The current state record of 8-04 is shared by two Lake Erie fish – one caught in 2016 and the other in 1995.
