Lane Still Leads But...

Florida's Bobby Lane still leads the BassFan Rookie of the Year Race (ROY), but this week will be a critical one for him. His two Top 10 finishes in Florida put him far ahead of the pack, but this week the FLW Tour is visiting the Ouachita River, a tough fishery. And with 200 boats in the FLW field, there's a long way to fall if there's a slip-up.

Lane needs another good finish to maintain his huge lead, as one Bassmaster Tour rookie has distanced himself from the pack: Pennsylvania's Dave Wolak finished 13th at last week's Clarks Hill Bassmaster and is now 2nd in the ROY points, a little less than 16 points behind Lane.

Florida's Preston Clark is second-hgiest of Bassmaster Tour rookies in the ROY standings and is 6th, 17 points behind Wolak.

The only other notable movement this week involves Okalhoma's Terry Butcher. He finished 3rd at Clarks Hill and jumps five places into 8th in the ROY race.

(PLEASE NOTE: Richard Bennett of Roseville, Calif. was incorrectly listed as an FLW Tour rookie this year. He is the same person as RJ Bennett, who was a Bassmaster Tour rookie in 2004. He has been removed from the 2005 ROY standings, and the remaining rookies have been re-sorted accordingly. Any discrepancy between the text above and the standings below is due to this re-sorting.)

About the ROY Race
The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race/Award recognizes the best rookie in all of tour-level professional fishing for the current year or season. Unlike the league rookie races, only true rookies are eligible: To qualify as a rookie for the BassFan race, a tour angler cannot have fished the pro (boater) side of any Bassmaster or FLW tour/series-level event before.

  • BassFan Rookie of the Year Race points are calculated using a methodology loosely similar to the BassFan World Rankings (points based on finish with bonuses given for winning and finishing high). Only regular-season events count. Championships do not.

  • The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race was created in 2002 as the first rookie race in professional bass fishing. Like Rookie of the Year awards in all sports, it recognizes top-performing newcomers to the professional ranks.
