Wolak Wins!

At the recent Potomac River FLW Tour event, only one guy had an outside shot at bumping off Pennsylvania's Dave Wolak to win the cross-tour BassFan Rookie of the Year (ROY) Race. That angler was Florida's Bobby Lane, who lit up the FLW Tour scoreboard during the first half of the season.

But Lane couldn't get it together at the Potomac. He finished 159th, by far his worst finish of the season, and fell from 3rd to 6th in the final BassFan ROY standings.

The upshot is that after 2 months of watching Lane fall in the standings and then waiting to see if he'd climb back up, Wolak – who also won the BASS ROY award – wins the BassFan ROY Race, making him the best rookie in all of tour-level fishing.

Congrats to Wolak and all the rookies who followed their dreams this year.

Notable

> Last year FLW Tour rookies occupied the Top 7 spots in the final standings. This year BASS rookies occupy the first three spots. The top FLW Tour rookie, in 4th, was Idaho's Ken Wick.

About the ROY Race
The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race/Award recognizes the best rookie in all of tour-level professional fishing for the current year or season. Unlike the league rookie races, only true rookies are eligible: To qualify as a rookie for the BassFan race, a tour angler cannot have fished the pro (boater) side of any Bassmaster or FLW tour/series-level event before.

  • BassFan Rookie of the Year Race points are calculated using a methodology loosely similar to the BassFan World Rankings (points based on finish with bonuses given for winning and finishing high). Only regular-season events count. Championships do not.

  • The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race was created in 2002 as the first rookie race in professional bass fishing. Like Rookie of the Year awards in all sports, it recognizes top-performing newcomers to the professional ranks.
